As with the seasons, our skin changes and the care our skin needs changes.
We’ve experienced an unusually hot sunny summer this year and a lot of us are noticing changes to our skin that we haven’t seen before.
Autumn is an essential time to address these skin concerns.
In clinic we are seeing more clients with photo-damage caused by the UVA and UVB rays from throughout the summer.
Hyperpigmentation is a common concern for clients, particularly after he summer months and the hot holidays.
How can you treat these skin concerns?
There are various treatments and products available to help diminish the appearance of hyperpigmentation.
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant which helps to reduce or fade pigmentation and further brighten the skin.
Autumn is an ideal time to increase or introduce retinols into your daily routine. Vitamin A is a potent ingredient which encourages cellular turnover, builds collagen, fights blemishes, helps to fade spots and softens fine lines and wrinkles.
Chemical peels are a go-to for treating pigmented skin and uneven skin tone. Peels include AHA’s such as Glycolic Acid and BHA’s such as Salicylic Acid. They work by removing the top layer of skin, allowing new and healthy skin to form and regenerate. This reduces the appearance of dark spots and allows products to easily penetrate the skin.
The cold crisp air in Autumn can cause our skin to dry and become more sensitive or irritated. Injecting more moisture is imperative to keep the skin hydrated, more plump and less sensitive. Choose a richer hydrator with antioxidants to further protect and nourish the skin. If you don’t already then introduce a hydrating face mask to your at-home routine. Throughout the colder months try using a mask twice a week. This will help to lock in moisture and keep the skin fresh and glowing.
How can you protect my skin?
Regardless of the time of year or the weather, whenever it’s daylight, we need to protect our skin.
Damaging UVA, Infrared-A and visible light radiation is present everyday and all year round. Ensure you wear sun and antioxidant protection everyday, recommending a SPF50+, particularly when using high potency ingredients and medical grade products which can cause the skin to be a little more sensitive.
