HGV Driver Medicals

Dr Patel now offers HGV Medicals, LGV Medical, PCV Medicals and Bus Medicals (section D4 of the license).  He can assess you to ensure you are fit to drive.

Every new Driver must undergo an HGV medical exam with accompanying paperwork (D4) that is submitted to the DVLA. Experienced Drivers are also required to undergo a new medical exam every time their licence comes up for renewal.

An HGV licence in categories: C, CE, C1, C1E, D, DE, D1 or D1E, is valid for five years.

Every five years up to age 45, you’ll need to sign a declaration to confirm that you still meet the medical standards. After the age of 45, you’ll need to provide a medical examination report every five years to renew your driving entitlement.

The HGV medical is comprised of two parts:

Discussion with Dr Patel

You will be interviewed by the Doctor, and have the opportunity to discuss any existing medical conditions that may interfere with safe driving. Your medical history will also be discussed.

Physical Exam by Dr Patel

This includes:

  • Completing an eye test (if you wear glasses/ contact lenses, one test without and one test whilst you’re wearing them)
  • Recording your blood pressure
  • Making note on the D4 Form any medication you’re currently taking
  • Going through your previous medical history (these questions are on the form and are compulsory).

You will need to bring the below items to the Driver assessment medical appointment:

  1. D4 Medical Form (or form relating to the medical you have booked)
  2. Driving licence (or passport if your licence is currently with DVLA or lost)
  3. Your driving glasses and optical prescription (contact lenses must be removed for the ‘uncorrected vision’ eye test);
  4. A list of all your current medication, the dosages and the dates you began taking them
  5. Any hospital letters or details of hospital consultants who are treating you;

There is a lot of medical information required for the form so please bring as much information as possible with you as this will help Dr Patel to complete the form.

These medicals are £80. A £50 deposit is required upon booking the appointment.

Appointments are available Monday evenings, Wednesdays 9am-8pm and Saturdays 9am-4pm.  We cover all of Kent including Gravesend, Northfleet, Dartford, Bexley, Orpington and surrounding areas like Essex.

Questions & Answers

When can I expect to receive the license?

Prior to COVID-19 DVLA advised you should allow 2-3 weeks however now, the majority of cases are dealt with within a week- but we always advise allowing 3 weeks.

Dr Patel is an experienced doctor, and has full GMC (General Medical Council) registration to ensure your medical assessment is completed correctly.

How long is the D4 form valid for after completion?

The DVLA D4 medical form is valid for 4 months from the date of Dr Patels signature (ie date of D4 form completion).  The paperwork should therefore be sent to the DVLA within 4 months of your medical for it to be accepted, for group 2 licence categories to be added to your licence or renewed. Please note this does not mean you must pass your HGV/PCV theory or practical driving test within 4 months.
